Thursday 10th September: A much brighter morning and by the time we got up a warm sunny day with a much more enjoyable early morning dog walk through Ambion Woods this morning. Made off before too many boats were in front of us for the cruise to the terminus at Snarestone. Slow progress in the usual places due to shallow canal and water the consistency of sludge. Near Snarstone the boat in front went round the right hand bend hugging the armco on the left and met a CART work boat (with young female crew) head on, both getting stuck in the mud in the process. I was called on to go past and didn't think too hard about taking the opportunity to get out of the way. However not far on we stopped to look at a waterways artist (Sylvia Hankin) moored near the old Bosworth field moorings,
(this is the boat but moored further down the Ashby later in the week)
purchased some greetings cards and had a chat during which the boat we had been following went passed us again. We had a very enjoyable cruise on through Shackerstone
where Bridie was steering
to Snarestone where we managed to moor OK just after bridge 61.
The line of the restoration can be seen after the terminus by following the tree line from the bridge.
Took the dogs for a walk to see progress with bridge 62 and the new winding hole is open.
Unfortunately this is only big enough for boats up to 50 feet and we will have to wait until next year when the next extension is completed. However we were fortunate enough to see our first boat moving on this new length as a short boat arrived and asked to be allowed to cruise through bridge 62 to the new winding hole.
Later went for a walk back into Snarestone to find a post box and ended up crossing a field to get back to the canal.
