Wednesday 6th May: Bridie woke the crew early today! We were up, dogs walked, boat underway, winded and moored at services, hose connected to tap and filling tank all by 7:15am breakfasted and heading back down the Ashby through the tunnel into Snarestone before 7:45. Plenty of cloud but glimpses of blue sky and sunshine and still enough wind to make turning and steering hard work. We only made it as far as Shakerstone before the wind was starting to get really wild. Mooring was a bit of a fight although we found a spot with a bit of hedgerow to provide a windbreak without actually being moored under any large trees just opposite Shackerstone station headquarters for the Battlefield steam railway (although closed up until the weekend). Moored up and got fire going (it was only 15 degrees inside the boat) and by 10:30 it had started to rain again.
Bridie got her jigsaw out and I read my Kindle as the rained started to settle in and got heavier. By lunchtime we had only seen about five boats on the move including one hire boat and one share boat heading south and a coal boat heading north.
He is probably not affected by the wind as much as us being deeper draughted and of low profile.
The afternoon got wilder with the wind sounding like an express train roaring through and one minute it would be dry and the next pouring with rain again. Only another two boats heading south so not that many braving the weather.
